Corporate Training in Second Life: Immersive Communication Training System 2.1 (ICTS)

Success in the workplace stems from effective communication. Sales training, customer service, price and terms negotiations with an outside vendor, manager-to-subordinate and subordinate-to-manager communications, annual performance reviews: all of these are just a few examples of everyday communications that need to be highly effectife in order for organization to succeed. Thus, corporate training departments conduct corresponding training on a regular basis.

Communication, however, is a dynamic process that can't be learned just by adsorbing information. Information should be accompanied by practice, learning by doing - and that's where simulations come into play.

Communication and sales were the first areas of corporate training to utilize interactive nature of the Second Life. Many of the early training programs only scratched the surface of the platform's capabilities by creating replications of real-life environment, however detailed and elaborate. To be sure, these simulations do work and bring benefits, including measurable ROI. Today, however, we have knowledge and capabilities to unleash inherent potential of programmable 3D virtual world in education and training.

Immersive Communication Training System v.2.1 is the first and the only commercially available simulation that allows trainee to get experience by practicing communications with the robotic avatars in a virtual environment closely resembling real life.

Furthermore, trainee can try different variants of responses and discover what thread of communication results in a better outcome. At the end of the simulation, trainee receives feedback on performance with detailed description of strengths and weaknesses of his or her approach. Simulation is based on Second Life platform, and is connected to back-end database / LMS system. Intuitive web-based graphical user interface allows instructional designers to review and modify simulation scenario, dialogs and replies, and even create a new simulation from scratch.
